When I created this WordPress theme, I wanted to take advantage of many cool features buried in the template system such as custom fields, extensive tagging, etc. What I’ve found is that these are the very reasons why it is tedious to post to this blog.
Because desktop software like ecto or MarsEdit cannot send WordPress custom field information, I was married to the Admin editor to actually publish each post. This added at least two additional steps to the publishing process, which I feel hindered me from posting more frequently. Therefore, I needed a new solution to make posting as easy as possible.
This post is the first test of the new theme enhancements - essentially I can now use the excerpt and slug fields of MarsEdit to publish articles with the associated icons on the left without having to go into the WordPress admin and manually upload and assign images to each post via a custom field.
Once I tweak some code and make it presentable, I’ll happily document my customizations in a future article.
Over the past week I’ve found that house hunting is a sure fire way to slow down your blog posting schedule. After going a full month without missing a day, I really dropped the ball this week as I took some time out to visit houses and the like.
A few people at work were joking that after I buy a house I’ll have very little time to update a blog, but apparently I can’t even update a blog while I’m looking for a house either.
Last night I received a very polite email asking my opinion on a specific affiliate program. Because I wasn’t familiar with that particular program, I couldn’t be much help and replied with an apology for my lack of knowledge on the subject. I also asked that he keep me informed about his success in the program as I was (and am) quite interested.
From this exchange, I realized that probably one of the most important qualities of a successful writer is his or her ability to write from experience and knowledge, without the “fluff”. It’s easy to report the news or regurgitate another story especially as a blogger when news is real-time and continuous, but it’s more meaningful to really learn about something and then write about the experience.
I suppose that’s something I should keep in mind myself.
I received several emails today - the first time I’ve received multiple emails in one day regarding this blog - and all of them were concerning the content of my posts. The gist I get is that readers want to learn a bit more about how I make money online, and by focusing in on that as a main topic I could draw more people into the blog.
Know what I say to that? Fair enough! I do think this blog has been lacking focus and that’s a direct result of me being interested in too many things at once. It’s time to narrow things down and really get into one or two specific topics.
That said, I’d like to go into more detail on legitimate ways to use the web as an income source. I’d like this site to be a resource for anyone who works - or wants to work - through the web. By that I mean freelancers, bloggers, entrepreneurs, and anyone else who earns an income online. (more…)

Chanpory Rith of LifeClever.com has a great article on how to overcome writer’s block by starting with an email. I found this article particularly useful because I’m not exactly consistent with my writing; some days everything is flowin’, and other days it’s like I’ve forgotten how to think. (more…)
