I’ve had a Google account since I signed up for Gmail a little over two and a half years ago. Since then I’ve made extensive use of Google Documents, Reader, Mail, Calendar, Apps on Your Domain, and of course, Search. Now I knew I used Search heavily, but never knew exactly how addicted I was until I took a look at my web history this afternoon and saw what you see in the graphic to the right.
Somehow I’ve managed to search Google over 26,000 times since I enabled web history on July 25, 2005. I think I may have a problem.
Let me share a quote by Nick Graham, “Chief Underpants Office” at Joe Boxer:
The brand is the amusement park. The product is the souvenir.
It got me thinking. A brand isn’t just a tagline or a logo; a brand is a concept - the sum of one’s actions rather than a singular act. In the blogging world (I hate the word “blogosphere”), an author’s brand is not defined by a particular website design or by a specific series of posts, but by the overall character and personality that the author shares with his or her readers. A lot can happen in one year both professionally and personally. Professionally in 2008, I hope to:
These are just the items relating to my career and the Internet; I certainly have many other personal goals that are much more important than these, but I wanted to keep this post semi-relevant.
With that, I wish you good luck in 2008 and a happy New Year!
Blogging with consistency is difficult because it takes patience, hard work, and a passion for writing. I’ve tried blogging several times before and haven’t had much success, primarily due to a lack of time. Making time to read and blog is very important to the overall success of the website, but sometimes I make the mistake of doing too much reading and not enough writing. Sure, keeping up on news around the Internet is an important part of the blogging process, but only when you contribute to the discussion do you truly challenge yourself and learn new things.
Rather than just import all my old posts and start with a comfortable body of content, I felt it would motivate me a little more to start completely from scratch. Also, because my new WordPress theme is heavily dependent on custom fields and tagging, older posts probably wouldn’t look too great anyway. So, here we go!
